RESUMO

Background Microwave ablation (MWA) is currently under preliminary investigation for the treatment of multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and has shown promising treatment efficacy. Compared with surgical resection (SR), MWA is minimally invasive and could preserve thyroid function. However, a comparative analysis between MWA and SR is warranted to draw definitive conclusions. Purpose To compare MWA and SR for preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC in terms of overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival rates and complication rates. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, 775 patients with preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC treated with MWA or SR across 10 centers between May 2015 and December 2021 were included. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed for patients in the MWA and SR groups, followed by comparisons between the two groups. The primary outcomes were overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates and complication rates. Results After PSM, 229 patients (median age, 44 years [IQR 36.5-50.5 years]; 179 female) in the MWA group and 453 patients (median age, 45 years [IQR 37-53 years]; 367 female) in the SR group were observed for a median of 20 months (range, 12-74 months) and 26 months (range, 12-64 months), respectively. MWA resulted in less blood loss, shorter incision length, and shorter procedure and hospitalization durations (all P < .001). There was no evidence of differences in overall and 1-, 3-, or 5-year PFS rates (all P > .05) between MWA and SR (5-year rate, 77.2% vs 83.1%; P = .36) groups. Permanent hoarseness (2.2%, P = .05) and hypoparathyroidism (4.0%, P = .005) were encountered only in the SR group. Conclusion There was no evidence of a significant difference in PFS rates between MWA and SR for US-detected multifocal T1N0M0 PTC, and MWA resulted in fewer complications. Therefore, MWA is a feasible option for selected patients with multifocal T1N0M0 PTC. © RSNA, 2024 Supplemental material is available for this article. RESUMO

The Zn dendrite and hydrogen evolution reaction have been a "stubborn illness" for the life span of zinc anodes, which significantly hinders the development of aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs). Herein, considering the ingenious molecular structure, a multifunctional additive based on the synergistic regulation of cations and anions at the interface is designed to promote a dendrite-free and stable Zn anode. Theoretical calculations and characterization results verified that the electrostatic shield effect of the cation, the solvation sheath structure, and the bilayer structural solid electrolyte film (SEI) jointly account for the uniform Zn deposition and side reaction suppression. Ultimately, a remarkably high average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.4% is achieved in the Zn||Cu cell for 300 cycles, and a steady charge/discharge cycling over 3000 and 300 h at 1.0 mA cm-2/1.0 mAh cm-2 and 10 mA cm-2/10 mAh cm-2 is obtained in the Zn||Zn cell. Furthermore, the assembled full battery demonstrates a prolonged cycle life of 2000 cycles.

RESUMO

4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) Inhibitor Sensitive 1 (HIS1) is an endogenous gene of rice, conferring broad-spectrum resistance to ß-triketone herbicides. Similar genes, known as HIS1-like genes (HSLs), exhibit analogous functions and can complement the herbicide-resistant characteristics endowed by HIS1. The identification of HIS1 and HSLs represents a valuable asset, as the intentional pairing of herbicides with resistance genes emerges as an effective strategy for crop breeding. Encoded by HIS1 is a Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate-dependent oxygenase responsible for detoxifying ß-triketone herbicides through hydroxylation. However, the precise structure supporting this function remains unclear. This work, which determined the crystal structure of HIS1, reveals a conserved core motif of Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate-dependent oxygenase and pinpoints the crucial residue dictating substrate preference between HIS1 and HSL.

RESUMO

The microneedle (MN) delivery system presents an attractive administration route for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the passive drug delivery mode and low drug loading of MNs often result in unsatisfactory therapeutic efficiency. To address these dilemmas, we developed dual engine-drive bionic MNs for robust AD treatment. Specifically, free rivastigmine (RVT) and RVT particles were co-loaded within the MNs to construct the valve and chambers of the guava, respectively, which can serve as an active engine to promote drug permeation by generating capillary force. K2CO3 and citric acid were introduced as a pneumatic engine into the MNs to promote the permeation of free RVT into deeper skin layers for early intervention in AD. Further, the RVT particles served as a drug depot to provide continuous drug release for prolonged AD treatment. Compared with free RVT-loaded MNs, the dual engine-driven bionic MNs showed an increase in drug loading, cumulative transdermal permeability, and normalized bioavailability of approximately 40%, 22%, and 49%, respectively. Pharmacodynamic studies further confirmed that the dual engine-driven bionic MNs were most effective in restoring memory and recognition functions in mice with short-term memory dysfunction. Therefore, the dual engine-driven bionic MNs hold great promise for highly efficient AD treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the hearing phenotype and the SLC26A4 mutation in enlarged vestibular aqueduct cases has not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES: To detect SLC26A4 mutation in a group of cases with enlarged vestibular aqueduct who received cochlear implantation and to analyze the correlation between the SLC26A4 genotype and the progression of deafness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine enlarged vestibular aqueduct patients were selected. Using the Sanger sequence to analyze SLC26A4 gene mutations. The 29 cases were divided into group A (carrying the c.919-2A > G mutation) and group B (not carrying the c.919-2A > G mutation). The difference in the duration of deafness was analyzed between the two groups. RESULTS: The detection rate of the c.1174A > T mutation in the postlingual deafness group was 37.5%, higher than that in the prelingual deafness group (0%). The difference in the duration of deafness between groups A and B was not statistically significant by the Mann-Whitney U test (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The correlation between the SLC26A4 genotype and the duration of deafness in cases with enlarged vestibular aqueduct is not yet clear. However, the c.1174A > T mutation may be linked to delayed hearing loss and the progression of deafness may be relatively slow in some cases of c.919-2A > G mutation.

RESUMO

Introduction: Tocilizumab and baricitinib are recommended treatment options for COVID-19 patients with hyperinflammatory response; however, there is a lack of systematic review directly evaluating their efficacy and safety. Objective: This review was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tocilizumab and baricitinib in the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Methods: Relevant databases were searched for studies that compared the effect or safety of baricitinib or tocilizumab in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The mortality was the main outcome. The hospital length of stay or adverse drug reactions were taken into consideration as secondary endpoints. The analyses were performed in Revman 5.3 or Stata 16.0. The protocol and analysis plan were pre-registered in PROSPERO, with the registration number CRD42023408219. Results: In total, 10 studies with 2,517 patients were included. The overall pooled data demonstrated that, there was no statistically significant difference in the 28-day mortality rate and the hospital length of stay between the tocilizumab and baricitinib (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.80-1.51, p = 0.57; OR = -0.68, 95% CI = -2.24-0.87, p = 0.39). The adverse reactions including secondary infection rate, thrombotic and bleeding events, and acute liver injury of tocilizumab were significantly higher than that of baricitinib. (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.18-1.88, p < 0.001,OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.11-2.08, p = 0.009; OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.11-2.08, p = 0.009; OR = 2.24, 95% CI = 1.49-3.35, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In patients hospitalized with COVID-19, no discernible difference in therapeutic efficacy was observed between tocilizumab and baricitinib; however, the group treated with baricitinib demonstrated a significantly lower incidence of adverse effects.

RESUMO

Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is common among children, but the impact of atopy on MPP severity in children is unknown. This study investigated whether atopic vs. nonatopic children had greater MPP severity. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on 539 (ages 3-14 years) patients who were hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University for MPP between January 2018 and December 2021, 195 were atopic and 344 were nonatopic. Of them, 204 had refractory MPP, and 335 had general MPP. And of atopic children, 94 had refractory MPP, and 101 had general MPP. Data on demographic and clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, clinical treatments were analyzed. Results: Significantly more boys with MPP were atopic than nonatopic (P < 0.05). More atopic (than nonatopic) children presented with prolonged fever and hospitalization, severe extra-pulmonary complications, asthma attaking, steroid and oxygen treatment, and increased IgE levels (all P < 0.05). In atopic (vs. nonatopic) children with MPP, the incidence of sputum plugs under the fiberoptic bronchoscopy and lobar pneumonia was significantly increased and required bronchoscopy-assisted and steroid therapy. Compared with nonatopic children, more atopic children developed refractory MPP (P < 0.05). Prolonged fever and hospitalization, severe extra-pulmonary complications, lymphocyte count, procalcitonin and lactate dehydrogenase levels, and percentages of atopy were all significantly higher (P < 0.05) among children with refractory MPP vs. general MPP. Moreover, Prolonged fever and hospitalization, lymphocyte count, procalcitonin and lactate dehydrogenase levels, and the treantment of steroid were all significantly higher (P < 0.05) among atopic children with refractory MPP vs. general MPP. Spearman correlation analysis showed strong associations between atopy and male sex, length of hospital stay, fever duration, IgE level, wheezing, lobar pneumonia, refractory MPP, and treatment with oxygen, hormones or bronchoscopy (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Atopy may be a risk factor for and was positively correlated with the severity of MPP in children.

RESUMO

Rubella virus infection can cause vertical transmission to the fetus during pregnancy. In China's Henan province, rubella surveillance needs to be well-established. In this research, a total of 1933 neonates and 2502 pregnant women were enrolled, and their sera for IgG and IgM antibodies against rubella were tested by chemiluminescence assay. Of 1933 neonates' sera tested, the seropositive of rubella IgG was 68.7%. The seroprevalence of rubella IgM in neonates was 0.4%. 30.9% of neonates had negative results for IgG and IgM antibodies. Two thousand five hundred and two pregnant women participated in the serosurvey, and 79.3% were rubella IgG positive. Rubella IgG seropositivity in pregnant women differed by age and number of births. 0.8% of the pregnant women had positive results for IgM against the rubella virus. The seronegative of rubella IgG and IgM antibodies in pregnant women was 19.8%. Due to the negative rubella-specific IgG antibody, many neonates remain at risk of rubella virus infection. Rubella virus continues to spread since some neonates and pregnant women with rubella-specific IgM antibody positive have been detected. Rubella vaccination may be introduced for childbearing-age women to increase immunity levels against rubella with periodic sero-surveillance.

RESUMO

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is an attractive target for cancer therapy. However, identifying potent and selective STAT3 small-molecule inhibitors with drug-like properties remains challenging. Based on a scaffold combination strategy, compounds with a novel N-(benzimidazol-5-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine scaffold were designed and their inhibition of the interleukin-6 (IL-6)/JAK/STAT3 pathway was tested in HEK-Blue IL-6 reporter cells. After optimization of lead compound 12, compound 40 was identified as a selective STAT3 inhibitor that directly binds the SH2 domain to inhibit STAT3 phosphorylation, translocation, and downstream gene transcription. Compound 40 exhibited antiproliferative activities against STAT3-overactivated DU145 (IC50 value = 2.97 µM) and MDA-MB-231 (IC50 value = 3.26 µM) cancer cells and induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In the DU145 xenograft model, compound 40 showed in vivo antitumor efficacy following intraperitoneal administration, with a tumor growth inhibition rate of 65.3% at 50 mg/kg, indicating promise for further development.

RESUMO

Conductive hearing loss is a common clinical condition caused by disorders of the middle and external ear. Here, we report a case of conductive hearing loss with complete tympanic membranes. Clinical examinations revealed no external and middle ear lesions, but high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography revealed enlarged vestibular aqueducts. Detailed audiological tests and follow-up results indicate that the exclusive air-bone gap is the outcome of inner ear malformation but not middle ear lesions, preventing the need for tympanic assessment.

RESUMO

Summary objective: To assess the clinical features and outcomes of hematological disease patients with Candida tropicalis bloodstream infections and determine the antifungal susceptibility of C. tropicalis. Methods: This is a retrospective, single-center, observational study conducted in the Department of Hematology at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from January 2013 to December 2021. A total of 26 hematological disease patients with C. tropicalis bloodstream infections were enrolled, and their clinical features, treatment plans, and prognoses were assessed. Univariate analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate analysis was conducted using a Cox regression model. The antifungal susceptibility of C. tropicalis was determined from patient blood cultures. Results: The patients had a mean age of 35 years (range: 10-65 years), 50% were male (13/26) and 88.5% had hematologic malignancies (23/26) while the remaining three patients included two cases of severe aplastic anemia and one case of ß-thalassemia. All patients had neutropenia. Seven patients were initially given azole alone (26.9%), five of whom failed treatment and died (71.4%). Fifteen patients were treated with echinocandin (57.7%), three of whom failed treatment and died (20.0%), and eight patients were treated with amphotericin B (30.8%), two of whom failed treatment and died (25.0%). The total and attributable mortality rates were 42.3 and 34.6%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that there are six risk factors for attributable deaths among hematological disease patients with C. tropicalis blood infections. These risk factors included septic shock, Pitt bacteremia scores ≥4, procalcitonin levels ≥10 ng/mL, positive plasma (1,3)- ß-D glucan assay, serum albumin levels <30.0 g/L, time from fever to antifungal treatment initiation ≥5 days and time between neutropenia and antifungal treatment ≥10 days. Moreover, skin and mucosal infections and a treatment schedule that included amphotericin B and drug combinations are protective factors for attributable deaths. Multivariate analysis showed that septic shock (p = 0.006) was an independent risk factor for attributable death. All isolates were sensitive to flucytosine and amphotericin B. The intermediate or resistance of C. tropicalis to fluconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole were 41.7, 50, and 41.7%, respectively. Conclusion: Hematological disease patients with C. tropicalis bloodstream infections had a high mortality rate, and early antifungal therapy significantly reduced mortality. Candida tropicalis was highly resistant to azole drugs and sensitive to flucytosine and amphotericin B. According to our study, the preferred agent is amphotericin B and drug combinations should be considered for severe infections.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Microwave ablation (MWA) has been widely used for unifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (U-PTC) and has recently been preliminarily used in multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (M-PTC). However, the efficacy and safety of MWA for M-PTC have not been investigated in large samples. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MWA for M-PTC and compare them with MWA for U-PTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study enrolled 504 patients (376 females) who underwent MWA for U-PTC (340 cases) or M-PTC (164 cases) from Jan 2015 to Dec 2020. The median age of the patients was 43 years (age range, 20-80 years). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline characteristics between M-PTC group and U-PTC group. The tumour progression, tumour disappearance, and complication rates were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The complete ablation was achieved in all enrolled cases in one session. According to the statistical results, no significant differences were shown in tumour progression-free survival (p  = 0.29) or cumulative tumour progression rate (6.7% vs. 4.3%, p  = 0.33) between the M-PTC and U-PTC groups during the follow-up time. However, the tumour disappearance rate in the M-PTC group was lower in the U-PTC group (40.9% vs. 62.8%, p < 0.001), and tumour disappearance was slower in the M-PTC group (p < 0.001). The complication rate showed no significant difference (3.0% vs. 4.9%, p  = 0.571). CONCLUSIONS: MWA is an effective and safe treatment for selected patients with M-PTC, and the prognosis is similar to that of U-PTC. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The present study provided evidence that compared with unifocal papillary thyroid cancer, microwave ablation could also treat multifocal T1N0M0 papillary thyroid cancer safely with similar clinical outcome, which could promote the application of minimally invasive treatment for papillary thyroid cancer. KEY RESULTS: • Microwave ablation for multifocal and unifocal T1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma had similar tumour progression rates after propensity score matching (6.7% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.33). • The tumour disappearance rate in the multifocal group was lower than that in the unifocal group (40.9% vs. 62.8%, p < 0.001), and tumour disappearance was slower in the multifocal group (p < 0.001). • Tumour size, number, and location were not risk factors for tumour progression in the multifocal papillary thyroid cancer group.

RESUMO

Solar energy has the potential to be the next-generation power source if the intermittent nature can be overcome via rational energy storage engineering. The competitiveness of solar rechargeable batteries can be further enhanced if the demand for multiple energy storage scenarios can be met within one device. Moreover, active electrochemical materials with different energy storage types are the critical component of this energy storage system. In this work, dual-duty electrochemical functional materials were introduced to guide multi-scene solar energy storage device design and fabrication. Furthermore, dual-duty NiCo2S4 nanosheets were prepared and applied to solar rechargeable batteries. A photo-assisted aqueous polysulfide/iodide flow battery was designed and fabricated with a charging voltage as low as 0.05 V, showing the good electrocatalytic performance of NiCo2S4 nanosheets for aqueous redox couples. Moreover, the low charging voltage leads to 93.5% of input electric energy saving under one sun illumination (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm-2). On the other hand is the photo-assisted sodium-ion battery with a NiCo2S4 anode, showing a remarkably low charging voltage of 0.67 V and a high discharge medium voltage of 1.05 V. The battery can save about 67.6% of input electric energy under 1 sun illumination.

RESUMO

Dissolving microneedles (MNs) have emerged as a promising transdermal delivery system, as they integrate the advantages of both injection and transdermal preparations. However, the low drug-loading and limited transdermal delivery efficiency of MNs severely hinder their clinical applications. Microparticle-embedded gas-propelled MNs were developed to simultaneously improve drug-loading and transdermal delivery efficiency. The effects of mold production technologies, micromolding technologies, and formulation parameters on the quality of gas-propelled MNs were systematically studied. Three-dimensional printing technology was found to prepare male mold with the highest accuracy, while female mold made from the silica gel with smaller Shore hardness could obtain a higher demolding needle percentage (DNP). Vacuum micromolding with optimized pressure was superior to centrifugation micromolding in preparing gas-propelled MNs with significantly improved DNP and morphology. Moreover, the gas-propelled MNs could achieve the highest DNP and intact needles by selecting polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and potassium carbonate (K2CO3): citric acid (CA) = 0.15:0.15 (w/w) as the needle skeleton material, drug particle carrier, and pneumatic initiators, respectively. Moreover, the gas-propelled MNs showed a 1.35-fold drug loading of the free drug-loaded MNs and 1.19-fold cumulative transdermal permeability of the passive MNs. Therefore, this study provides detailed guidance for preparing MNs with high productivity, drug loading, and delivery efficiency.

RESUMO

Precise and specific spatiotemporal domains of gene expression regulation are critical for embryonic development. Recent studies have identified GLTSCR1 as a gene transcriptional elongation regulator in cancer research. However, the function of GLTSCR1, especially in embryonic development, remains poorly understood. Here, we found that GLTSCR1 was essential for cardiac development because Gltscr1 knockout (Gltscr1-/-) led to embryonic lethality in mice with severe congenital heart defects (CHDs). Ventricular septal defect and double outflow right ventricular were also observed in neural crest cells with conditional deletion of Gltscr1, which were associated with neonatal lethality in mice. Mechanistically, GLTSCR1 deletion promoted NPPA expression by coordinating the CHD risk G allele of rs56153133 in the NPPA enhancer and releasing the transcription factor ZNF740-binding site on the NPPA promoter. These findings demonstrated that GLTSCR1 acts as a candidate CHD-related gene.

RESUMO

Breast cancer (bc) is the second most common type of human malignancies with highest morbidity and mortality in the female population. Therefore, it is essential to develop novel and effective therapies for bc treatment. The main aim of the current study is to investigate the functions of CEBPB and THBS2 in bc and the underlying mechanism. Reverse transcription-quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot were performed for the measurement of ribonucleic acids and proteins. Function and mechanism assays were, respectively, conducted for the evaluation of bc biological behaviors and exploration of the potential correlation of genes. According to bioinformatics analyses and experimental results, THBS2, up-regulated in bc tissues and cell lines, could facilitate cell migration, invasion and EMT in bc. CEBPB was validated to facilitate miR-29a-3p transcription, thus negatively modulating THBS2 expression. The results of rescue experiments reflected that CEBPB could regulate the malignant behaviors of bc cells via THBS2. Furthermore, CEBPB was ascertained to inhibit the transcription of B3GALTL to affect THBS2 protein O-fucosylation and secretion. The interaction between THBS2 and ITGB1 was confirmed, and THBS2 was found to activate the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. To conclude, CEBPB could restrain bc cell migration, invasion and EMT via inhibition on THBS2 expression and O-fucosylation.

RESUMO

Background: Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have confirmed the favorable clinical benefit of pembrolizumab in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, considering the strict inclusion and exclusion criteria in clinical research, there are certain differences between patients in the real-world, it is unclear whether the findings of clinical trials are fully representative of the treatment efficacy in patients who will eventually use it. Therefore, to further comprehensively assess the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab in NSCLC, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on the latest RCTs and real-world studies (RWSs). Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, The Web of Science, and clinical trials.gov as of December 2021. RCTs and RWSs of patients receiving pembrolizumab monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy for advanced NSCLC were included. Results: The meta-analysis ultimately included 11 RCTs and 26 RWSs with a total of 10,695 patients. The primary outcomes of this study were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), serious adverse events (SAEs), the incidence of severe pneumonia reactions, and drug-related mortality. Direct meta-analysis results showed that in RCTs, pembrolizumab in combination with chemotherapy was superior to chemotherapy in terms of OS (HR=0.60, 95%CI:0.50-0.73), PFS (HR=0.47, 95%CI:0.38-0.58) and ORR (OR=3.22, 95%CI:2.57-4.03); pembrolizumab monotherapy was superior to chemotherapy in terms of OS (HR=0.73, 95%CI:0.66-0.80) and ORR (OR=1.90, 95%CI:1.17-3.09), but comparable to chemotherapy in terms of PFS (HR=0.83, 95%CI:0.66-1.04). The ORR values in retrospective single-arm studies were 45% (40%-51%). Conclusion: In RCTs, pembrolizumab monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy is more effective and safer than chemotherapy for advanced NSCLC. In RWSs, ECOG PS 0-1 was shown to correlate with PFS and OS for patients with NSCLC.

RESUMO

Chiral 2-substituted chromanes are important substructures in organic synthesis and appear in numerous natural products. Herein, the correlation between specific optical rotations (SORs) and the stereochemistry at C2 of chiral 2-substituted chromanes was investigated through data mining, quantum-chemical calculations using density functional theory (DFT), and mechanistic analyses. For 2-aliphatic (including acyloxy and alkenyl) chromanes, the P-helicity of the dihydropyran ring usually corresponds to a positive SOR; however, 2-aryl chromanes with P-helicity tend to exhibit negative SORs. 2-Carboxyl (including alkoxycarbonyl and carbonyl) chromanes often display small experimental SORs, and theoretical calculations for them are prone to error because of the fluctuating conformational distribution with computational parameters. Several typical compounds were discussed, including detailed descriptions of the asymmetric synthesis, absolute configuration (AC) assignment methods, and systematic conformational analysis. We hope this work will enrich the knowledge of the stereochemistry of chiral 2-substituted chromanes.

RESUMO

Human parsing is a fine-grained semantic segmentation task, which needs to understand human semantic parts. Most existing methods model human parsing as a general semantic segmentation, which ignores the inherent relationship among hierarchical human parts. In this work, we propose a pose-guided hierarchical semantic decomposition and composition framework for human parsing. Specifically, our method includes a semantic maintained decomposition and composition (SMDC) module and a pose distillation (PC) module. SMDC progressively disassembles the human body to focus on the more concise regions of interest in the decomposition stage and then gradually assembles human parts under the guidance of pose information in the composition stage. Notably, SMDC maintains the atomic semantic labels during both stages to avoid the error propagation issue of the hierarchical structure. To further take advantage of the relationship of human parts, we introduce pose information as explicit guidance for the composition. However, the discrete structure prediction in pose estimation is against the requirement of the continuous region in human parsing. To this end, we design a PC module to broadcast the maximum responses of pose estimation to form the continuous structure in the way of knowledge distillation. The experimental results on the look-into-person (LIP) and PASCAL-Person-Part datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method compared with the state-of-the-art methods, that is, 55.21% mean Intersection of Union (mIoU) on LIP and 69.88% mIoU on PASCAL-Person-Part.
